Hispanic Heritage Month
Yesterday, September 15th, marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month! Throughout this month, we will be spotlighting a variety of Hispanic visual and performing artists. Today we recognize Puerto Rican and Haitian artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. A self taught artist based in Brooklyn New York, He first attracted attention for his graffiti under the name “SAMO” in the 70’s. A decade later, he began collaborating with pop art painter Andy Warhol creating prolific neo-expressionist paintings. Though he later passed away in 1988 at the age of 27, his legacy is still featured across the country in galleries like the MoMA and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
