Highlighting Black Excellence:
Today we celebrate Marsha P Johnson. Johnson was a pioneering figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, particularly known for her activism in the late 1960s and early 1970s. One of the key milestones in Marsha’s life was her involvement in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a series of spontaneous demonstrations against police raids at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Marsha was at the forefront of the resistance during the uprising, fighting for the rights of marginalized groups within the LGBTQ+ community. Marsha co-founded the Gay Liberation Front with her close friend Sylvia Rivera. In 2019, the New York City government recognized Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera by unveiling statues in their honor, acknowledging their vital contributions to the fight for equality. Her life and work have become a beacon for those fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, encouraging a more inclusive and diverse approach to advocacy.
