Random Recognition
For Black History Month Random Recognition celebrates the achievements and community efforts of notable Black artists. Today we recognize … Thurgood Marshall. Born in Baltimore, Maryland (at the time, known as the most segregated city in the country) Thurgood was raised by his mother, who was a teacher, and his father, who worked in the service sector. He went to Howard University, he spent years working at the NAACP and he served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Marshall was the Court’s first African-American justice. Prior to his judicial service, he successfully argued several cases before the Supreme Court, including Brown v. Board of Education. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993. Thurgood Marshall told his students at Howard University that they had to be social engineers, advocating for racial justice.
