Graduating as valedictorian and a dance major from PiM, Rae Charles continued her studies at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. As a professional, Rae has been a dancer in Threads Dance Project, a local dance company, where she performed an aerial dance on silks for Secrets of Slave Songs, a Sage-nominated production. She was also commissioned by local jazz company Rhythmically Speaking in 2016 to create new work for the company’s annual production at the Southern Theater.
Throughout her career, Charles has also worked as an educator, including three years teaching Modern and Jazz at PiM. When it comes to teaching, Ms. Charles loves the enthusiasm of the students’ aha moments. “When they get new knowledge and feel like they’re progressing…it’s addictive,” she says.
